Freight gate relocation a regional win - 28 May, 2007
The Sunraysia Mallee Economic Development Board commend Premier Steve Bracks’ announcement for the $8 million relocation of the Mildura Freight Gate from central Mildura to Merbein at the Iron Horse intermodal facility.

The Board sees this announcement as vital in opening up the riverfront to investment opportunities and creating transport efficiencies within the region.

John Irwin, Chairman of the Sunraysia Mallee Economic Development Board (SMEDB) said “This is the first step towards realisation of the transport vision for the region, something that SMEDB, Mildura Rural City Council and others have been working towards for many years.”

“This announcement shows the belief that the Government has in our region and importance of efficient and well planned transport infrastructure,” said Mr Irwin.

SMEDB supports the relocation of the freight gate to Merbein as an interim measure in addressing the region’s long term transport infrastructure needs and will work collaboratively with the Victorian Government and the transport industry towards an integrated solution.

Andrew Millen, CEO of SMEDB, said “The inefficiencies of our rail freight system are well documented, and the removal of the freight gate from the city will see the development of the city occur in a planned and logical manner.”

“The importance of the river to our lifestyle has been acknowledged and this will further integrate the city with the river and encourage development of the city,” said Mr Millen. The long term transport vision for the region is for the development of an intermodal freight hub at Thurla (outside Red Cliffs on the Meringur Road) and further information can be found by visiting www.mildura.vic.gov.au and following the Business & Investment link to the AusLink Transport Submissions.
