Brunei trade visit to Mildura - 13 March, 2007
The Sunraysia Mallee Economic Development Board (SMEDB) and Mildura Rural City Council are hosting a delegation of 14 senior Brunei Government officials, non-government representatives and supermarket owners on Wednesday 14 March.

The contingent accepted the invitation from SMEDB following a week of intensive discussions in Brunei in February 2007. The purpose of the delegation is to see the region and its produce first hand and also look at large scale agricultural investment opportunities.

The Brunei Government has embarked on an ambitious worldwide program to sell premium Halal products across the globe. Brunei believe that Australia is best able to deliver on quality and has spent eight months with key SMEDB figures identifying those products which fit the Brunei Premium Halal Food Brand.

Six of the Brunei delegation are more focussed on investment into the region and will visit and meet with representatives of local companies to discuss a range of opportunities in agricultural and horticultural industries.

Andrew Millen, CEO of SMEDB said “We are engaging with the business community, banks, accountants and investment companies to identify investment opportunities to put before the Bruneians for their consideration. We’re showing the Bruneians the opportunities and working towards achieving two things, investment in the region, and product in the Brunei Premium Halal Food Brand.”

Chairman of SMEDB, John Irwin, was enthusiastic about the prospects of success, “Mildura is leading Australia in forming important leads with the Brunei Government. We have the products and a farming ethos which is about quality.”

“We have laid the base for opportunities which are unique and the Board sees no reason why the synergies which exist with Brunei cannot be translated to major sales contracts and major investment in the region in the very near future,” said Mr Irwin.

The new Brunei Premium Halal Food Brand will be launched by His Majesty, the Sultan of Brunei, on 15 August this year and is likely to include citrus, table grapes, vegetables, dried fruit, nuts, honey and other products from the Mildura region.

Businesses interested in meeting with the Bruneian delegation regarding opportunities for their product to be included in the Brunei Premium Halal Food Brand are invited to attend discussions on Wednesday 14 March at the Committee Room, First Floor, Council Civic Building, corner of Deakin Avenue and Ninth Street in Mildura from 4:30pm – 6pm.
